PA DIRECT ACCESS

Until July 2004, Pennsylvania law mandated that all care administered by a physical therapist be prescribed by a physician.  The new Direct Access Law has changed this, and now some physical therapists in Pennsylvania are qualified to provide care without a physician's prescription.  Under this new law, clients may be treated by a Direct Access Licensed physical therapist for 30 calendar days without a physician's order.  After 30 calendar days, the client must be seen by a physician and obtain a prescription for continued physical therapy if necessary.

In order to provide care without a physician's order, physical therapists must meet certain education and experience requirements.  These requirements include participating in at least 20 hours of specialized continuing education every two years.  Valley Rehabilitation's Susan Andrews is licensed as a Direct Access physical therapist.

Although Direct Access is now legal in Pennsylvania, not all insurance companies will honor or pay for Direct Access claims.  The following insurance companies will pay for Direct Access physical therapy:

  • Health America / Health Assurance
  • Highmark
  • Capital Blue Cross
  • CIGNA PPO
  • Aetna
  • State Farm Auto
  • Various Workers Comp Carriers
